Every autumn, as the days shorten and the temperatures drop, riders face the same clothing choices. And when we review our options, the question arises: What is the best jacket or jersey for me?
What would perfection be? A garment that protects to the maximum in extreme weather, but is also breathable and ultralight. But with those properties proportionally inverse – the more protection we have, the less breathability, and so on – the key is finding the jacket that best matches the weather we face and the type of riding we do.
How do we choose? Fit? Insulation? Weight? The most objective guide is the range of temperatures we ride in. Based on that, Etxeondo offer seven options, split across three categories: maximum, lightweight and autumn protection. The majority of our jackets are also available in women’s-specific versions.
Riders who ride through the worst of the winter weather demand garments that guarantee warmth and comfort in the worst conditions. Etxeondo’s maximum protection range is ideal for pre-season riding; those bleak, cold days when we head out to do long kilometres working on aerobic thresholds.
OBEN / OBENA JACKET ( -5ºC / 10ºC )
Oben, and Obena, the women’s-specific equivalent, is designed to work from -5ºC through to a maximum 10ºC. A combination of Gore-Tex infinium fabric – previously known as Windstopper – throughout, with a Fleece Warm Plus lining on the chest, back and arms guarantees warmth in the harshest conditions. Infinium shuts out the wind; Fleece Warm Plus generates small pockets of warm air that isolate us from the cold.
76 JACKET ( -2ºC / 12ºC )
The next option is Jacket 76, suitable from -2ºC to 12ºC. What makes Jacket 76 different to Oben? While Jacket 76 still uses Windstopper Infinium throughout, we only use Fleece Warm panels across the chest, making it more suited to milder conditions.
If you could only choose one, it would be this one. The must-have wardrobe essential for every cyclist, perfect for a majority of winter days. Lightweight, with the wind-blocking properties of Gore-Tex Infinium, but without any kind of fleece lining, maximising breathability. Pair with a carefully chosen Etxeondo base layer and face a wide range of conditions with confidence.
SEKUR / SEKURA JACKET ( 2ºC / 16ºC )
Sekur is cut entirely from Gore-Tex Infinium, with abrasion-resistant Dyneema fibre panels on the sleeves. Totally windproof, with added protection in the event of a fall. Warm enough to wear down to a minimum of 2ºC, but still comfortable at 16ºC for those days when the midday sun pushes the temperature into double figures.
DENA JACKET ( 4ºC / 18ºC )
Dena is Etxeondo’s most versatile jacket. Short-sleeved and cut from Gore-Tex Infinium, Dena covers a huge range of temperatures and conditions. With Dena armwarmers, also made from Gore-Tex Infinium, and an Epela or Illuna base layer, the rider can stay warm down to 4ºC. With a summer-weight Labur vest, you can still be comfortable at 18ºC. The choice of our World Tour professionals for cold, wet days, in racing and training.
TEKNIKA JACKET ( 6ºC / 18ºC )
The last of our Lightweight family is Teknika: Gore-Tex Infinium chest panels, paired with Thermosystem sleeves and back. Light, supremely comfortable, highly breathable. Overall, the effect is similar to wearing a thermo jersey with a GoreTex Infinium vest, but in a single garment. The only jacket in our collection that is only available to men.
Autumn Protection, our final selection of garments. They maintain body temperature, but without Gore-Tex Infinium they also maximise breathability. Perfect for days when the temperature fluctuates. We recommend pairing them with an Arima or Busti vest, carried in the back pocket, to protect from the cool of the early morning or on the descent after cresting a climb.
IBAI / IBAIA JACKET ( 12ºC / 20ºC )
A thermal jersey constructed from Thermosystem Hydro-Repellent fabric, which insulates and protects from the elements. In light rain, the ultra-thin surface treatment means water simply slides off the fabric.
BOMBER ( 12ºC / 20ºC )
Cut from Thermosystem Comfort, a warm, close-fitting jersey. An elegant design ensures a uniquely stylish aesthetic.
Did it help you?
Finally, remember that even temperature can be subjective; it depends on the tolerance we have for the cold, choice of baselayer and the intensity at which we ride. For example, at 2ºC a jacket a professional might use for racing will be less suitable for an easy winter ride with friends. We always recommend applying common sense; know yourself and your body and consider the kind of riding you enjoy the most.Has this helped? We hope so.
